ST HELENS Cricket Club 1st XI travelled to Newton-le-Willows for their first game of the season on Saturday.

The home side batted first and set a stiff target after reaching 231-4 declared.

in reply, Neil Woods celebrated relinquishing the captaincy with a fine 60 but received little support as St Helens slumped to 182 all out to give Newton the points.

The 2nd XI faced a strong line-up at Windleshaw Road and were dismissed for just 96, with Gareth Davies playing a captain's innings for his 67.

It was not enough to test the visitors though and they passed the total for the loss of just one wicket.

The third team were confident of adding to their fine win at Lytham but heavy rain caused the match to be called off.

The arrival of overseas player Laden Gamiet has been delayed due to passport problems. He is now expected to arrive in two weeks and comes with a fine reputation as an opening bat with Border in South Africa.

Meanwhile, the club is also looking forward to welcoming back president Bernard Pilkington who is currently convalescing at home following major surgery.

On Saturday the 1st team entertain Worsley, while the 2nds make the short journey to Huyton.
