A WHITEFIELD lad has been chosen to represent England in an international showdown of soccer skills.

He is Stuart Rosendale, of Ripon Avenue, who will be joined by Derek Abercrombie, of Powell Street, Elton.

They both play for Bury Gateway, a club for people with learning disabilities. They have been selected to represent Gateway groups from across the country for the annual Geneva Tournament in Switzerland.

For two players to come from the same club is rare, but both players impressed scouts enough in a trial at Warwick University to warrant a place.

Midfielder Stuart (20) said: "I'm excited and nervous because it's the first time I will have played at international level. "It will be nerve-racking playing against people from all over Europe."

But forward Derek (35) is more relaxed.

He already has international experience. He said: "I've been before about ten years ago. It was great playing for England for the first time. I really enjoyed it, and I am looking forward to going again."

Possible opponents at the tournament, which kicks off at the end of May, include Germany, Ireland, Spain and France.

More than £500 will be needed to pay for flights, new tracksuits, trainers and boots.

But despite approaching sports shops across the borough for support, the dynamic duo are still looking for a sponsor.

Bury Gateway co-ordinator Margaret Barker said: "They will have to raise the money themselves and we've got a list of things that they'll need."

Stuart and Derek are now tackling the problem with a series of fund-raising events.

On Saturday (April 28), they will raise money washing cars outside the Mosses Centre in Cecil Street, where Bury Gateway is based.

A disco is also planned at the centre on May 12 from 7.30pm until 11pm, with tickets available on the door, or by calling the centre on 797 2463.
