RIGHT on cue the silly season of managerial quotes has begun.

A time when one decision can apparently mean instant relegation or promotion.

A time to blame anybody but the real culprit.

I've decided therefore this week to give you a little quiz. Below you will see two quotes attributed to certain managers. Your challenge is to decide what was actually said and what should have been said. Good luck.

Lou Macari (Huddersfield): "I felt that had a common sense decision been made the referee would only have booked the goalkeeper."

Or

"My goalkeeper knows that if he handles outside the box he runs the risk of being sent off. His gamble did not pay off and he can thus have no complaints."

Walter Smith (Everton): "There were no really bad challenges. There was no malice." Or "The ref booked 12 players simply because they failed to heed his earlier warnings. As such it was inevitable that somebody would be sent off."

Sam Allardyce (Bolton): "All he did was raise his arms up because he thought it wasn't a foul -- but the referee judged that to be dissent."

Or

"My player had a tantrum, the ref advanced the kick 10 yards and Crewe scored. How can I blame anybody else except Farrelly."

Graeme Souness (Blackburn): "The referee was disappointing, there was some clever fouling going on and he either chose to ignore it or wasn't aware it was happening."

Or

"I've told my players that they must always play within the laws and spirit of the game. This makes it much easier for the referee to do his job and that's so very important."

Answers on a postcard please. First prize is an all expenses-fiddled trip to Chesterfield. The monthly meeting of Blackburn Referees' Association takes place on Thursday, April 26 at Longshaw WMC, Bryan Street, Blackburn at 7.30pm.

All members are asked to attend and new recruits are especially welcome.
