VISITORS were treated to an exhibition of art and crafts at Salesbury Memorial Hall.

Ribble Valley Embroiderers' Guild held an open day in the hall on Ribchester Road, when visitors were invited to view an exhibition of modern free embroidery and textile art, take part in workshops and enjoy home-made refreshments.

The highlight of the day was a design workshop in which visitors from the age of ten to 85 created birthday cards using various fabrics and processes with assistance from members.

The Guild is hoping to attract more members, anyone who is interested in working with textiles from beginner to professional.

Meetings are held in the Memorial Hall on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm, with workshops on the following Saturdays.

The Guild is also hoping to attract a junior membership, from the age of ten years onwards.

Chairman Gillian Hill said, "The open day is to let people know what the Embroiderers' Guild is about.

"We are not just 'cross-stitch' - embroidery now is an art-form, and involves hot air guns and soldering irons."

Gillian said that at one workshop they were even asked to bring an anvil for metalwork!

The next meeting is on May 18 when Lynn Mawtus from Kendal demonstrates Reverse Applique.
