A LOCAL school has raised £1,000 in aid of the Lancashire Evening Telegraph-backed Indian Earthquake Appeal.

Pupils at Beardwood School, in Blackburn, held a non-uniform day to generate cash which will go to help people in the western state of Gujarat, devastated by the earthquake in January.

Year 10 pupils also held an activities lunchtime where they organised various fundraising activities and stalls from selling cakes to throwing wet sponges at the technology staff.

The pupils organised the entire event themselves and even counted the money.

Coun Salim Mulla, one of the men behind the appeal, called at the school to collect the cheque.

The appeal now stands in the region of £50,000 and is to be pooled with similar appeals in Bolton and Preston taking it to £170,000.
