Leigh RMI 2 Yeovil 3

LEIGH RMI produced a battling performance against title-chasing Yeovil Town at Hilton Park on Tuesday but went down to a heroic defeat as the Somerset side kept their hopes of Third Division Football well and truly alive.

Just 10 days after the 6-1 hammering at the hands of the 'Glovers' at Huish Park, Leigh set about redressing the balance early on and threatened to avenge that defeat by opening the scoring in the 24th minute.

Ged Kielty's teasing corner found Dave Ridings and the midfielder seized the opportunity to record his 12th goal of the season from close range.

Leigh took their lead into the half-time interval, but this was in the face of quite relentless Yeovil pressure on a near-waterlogged surface.

The visitors started the second half in the same vain as they ended the first, but still, the Railwaymen did not look like a side who had lost four and conceded an amazing 15 goals in their last five matches.

However, it was Yeovil who struck the decisive blow on the hour mark when Roy O'Brien nipped in to record the equaliser.

Midway through the half O'Brien's speculative effort from 30 yards could only be parried by Felgate and James Bent pounced to net the second from a difficult angle.

The goal seemed to have deflated Leigh but their never say die attitude was epitomised by Steve Jones' wonder strike with little over 20 minutes left, his jinking run and powerful drive leaving the exceptional Tony Pennock helpless.

Yeovil wrapped up the points with 17 minutes left to break RMI hearts after such a spirited showing. Skiverton's long ball was flicked on by Bent, McIndoe checked inside Ged Murphy on the penalty spot and slipped under Felgate.

Defeat leaves Leigh with just 48 hours to pick themselves up before facing Morecambe at Hilton Park on Thursday.
