SEDGLEY Park face a nerve-tingling promotion play-off match after finishing in second place in the RFU National League Three (North).

With no game for either the first or second XV last Saturday, Sedgley members swelled the crowd at Liverpool St Helens where Stourbridge were the visitors.

A win for the home team would have handed Sedgley the title, but it was never going to happen as a below strength side was easily beaten 48-16.

So Stourbridge will take their place in League Two next season, and the two clubs in second place in Leagues Three north and south will play off for one further promotion spot.

Down in the south, Plymouth have won their league and will be promoted. Launceston, following a 28-28 draw at Reading, are confirmed in second place.

The rules allow for a single play-off match only, on the ground of the club with the better league record, so Sedgley Park will have a home match against Launceston on a date to be determined.

It will be, quite simply, the most important match Sedgley have ever played. If the team is successful, Sedgley Park will join the likes of Waterloo, Rosslyn Park, Harrogate, Wharfedale and Fylde in League Two, as well as renewing acquaintance with Kendal and Preston Grasshoppers.

If Orrell are relegated from League One, they will be seen at Park Lane too.

All the above is subject to the RFU's decision on what to do about games not played due to the foot and mouth crisis.

The main problem is that two clubs, Lydney in League Two and Aspatria in Sedgley's league, both find themselves in relegation positions with games not played. And if nobody is relegated, it is difficult to see how anyone can be promoted without unbalancing all the leagues. The RFU has a difficult decision to make and that ruling will be awaited with bated breath at Park Lane.

Park Lane is the venue this Sunday for the Lancashire Junior cup finals, four games played one after the other, beginning with the under-13s.

Sedgley Park have one team involved as the under-14s defend their title won as under-13s last season. Fylde are the opponents, as last time.

Two other Sedgley teams, the under 15s and 16s, both fell at the semi-final stage. The standard of play in all four finals will be very high, with much youthful talent on show.
