OH what a beautiful evening it was for Blackpool Operatic Players as Oklahoma opened to a warm reception of friends and family at Blackpool Grand Theatre this week.

It's the first outing of Rodgers and Hammerstein's tuneful tale of courting and country folk for the popular drama society.

And from Tuesday's curtain up to the inevitable ride into the sunset there's quite enough high-kicking, square dancing and soulful singing to satisfy the most ardent of musical buffs.

Karen Gray is confident and spirited as the lovely Laurey, the love interest of two sparring suitors, the cute cowboy Curly and surly hired hand Jud, powerfully played by Nigel Taylor and John Chesters.

Opportunity Knocks winner Jane Curtis is quietly impressive as Laurey's iron-willed Aunt Eller and provides the most impressive Southern accent of the night.

While the amiable Erik Blackburn turns in an amazing Renee reproduction from 'Allo 'Allo as travelling Persian peddler Ali Hakim.

But favourites of the night have to be Carla Green and Adam Carter as Ado Annie and the guy who can't say no to her -- the wild-living womaniser Will Parker. NODA winner Carla once again proves she has spot-on comic timing while Adam is her perfect partner.

One to watch also is BOP newcomer Dave Baker as Annie's shotgun-toting pa Andrew Carnes with a wonderful voice and an easy stage presence.

Oklahoma runs until Saturday with performances at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee. For tickets from £7.50 call the box office on 290190.
