LITTLE Phoebe Hopkinson is pictured getting into the swing of things when Bury Croquet Club opened its doors to raise money for Bury Hospice's Red Rose Week.

The 21-month-old was just one of the many visitors who turned out in the spring sunshine at Coronation Park in Radcliffe on Saturday (April 21).

Mallets were in motion and there was a real "hoop" la at the Coronation Park court.

The fine weather certainly helped and curious youngsters and adults who went along quickly discovered that the sport is far removed from its popular image.

Instead of gentrified old folk leisurely coaxing balls through hoops in between nibbling on cucumber sandwiches, the game is one of thrilling strategy and strict discipline.

Besides helping to raise the profile of the sport locally, the event also raised more than £200 for Bury Hospice through donations and a bring and buy sale.

The club upped-hooks from Bury Athletics Club four years ago and moved to Coronation Park so that games could be held on a daily basis.

It is open to players of all levels and ages and to find out more call Jean Hargreaves on 792 4694.
