TEN people were arrested and more than £5 million worth of drugs seized by police after they swooped on an industrial estate in Radcliffe.

Around 30 officers raided a warehouse at Bealey Industrial Estate, off Dumers Lane, at 3pm on Wednesday (April 25) following a six month operation by Greater Manchester's drugs unit.

Ten people, nine men and one woman, are being detained at police stations throughout Greater Manchester as a result of Operation Torch. A number of those being questioned are from the Bury area.

Drugs grabbed by police include 230,000 ecstasy tablets, eight kilos of cocaine, 46 kilos of amphetamine and 45 kilos of "skunk" cannabis.

Detective Chief Inspector Vincent Petrykowski, who headed the investigation, said: "This is a major seizure of drugs destined for the streets of the North West.

"The success of the operation is due to the hard work and dedication of officers on the drug squad during the past six months, and demonstrates the commitment of Greater Manchester Police to focus and target those people who distribute drugs in our area."

One woman, who works at an engineering company on the estate, said the area was suddenly swamped with uniformed and plain-clothes officers on Wednesday afternoon. People working on the estate were prevented from leaving while the operation took place.
