THERE will be no appeal against the leniency of sentence given to a man who abused and attacked two paramedics.

Ian Rushton, head of the Crown Prosecution Service in Burnley, said today: "There is no appeal allowed against the leniency of sentences from magistrates courts, only for more serious matters which have been dealt with by the crown court.

"It would not be appropriate for me to comment on the sentence in this case. As the prosecution service we presented all the details to the magistrates."

Ian Stuart Murgatroyd was given a 12 months community rehabilitation order and he was ordered to pay £318 compensation to his victims.

Paramedics David Mitchell and Philip White, who work out of Barnoldswick, had been called to an address in Brierfield where a woman was having an epileptic fit.

When Mr White arrived with a stretcher for the woman Murgatroyd began to drag her off. The court was told he was extremely violent, shouting and swearing.

Following a struggle Mr White was kicked in the kidney, he also suffered multiple bruising and a swollen knee and Mr Mitchell suffered multiple contusions.

Both had to have time off work after the incident and are seeking advice from their union.
