AN ATHERTON woman beat a hasty retreat from her bedroom with singed hair and eyebrows after a fire broke out at her terraced Atherton home.

Firefighters removed a burnt bed and put out the back bedroom blaze on Friday morning at Mona Hindley's home in Tyldesley Road.

A fire service spokesman said: "The fire was started by a carelessly discarded smoking material. A lady in the house singed her hair while closing the bedroom door but she did not need any treatment."
