NEIL Hodgson finished ninth quickest -- and set the top speed of the day at 232kmh -- at the first qualifying session in Japan.

Hodgson's performance was packed with positives. Series leader Troy Bayliss could only record the 15 quickest time.

The results show the difficulties European-based riders face in adjusting to the culture and conditions of a different continent.

At least the perfect sunny weather, a welcome relief after the freak conditions of Phillip Island in Australia, helped the championship regulars feel at home.

But the Japanese contingent know this twisty and undulating 3,737km track, set in beautiful, wooded countryside against the backdrop of the snow-topped Zaoh mountain range ski resort, like the backs of their hands.

It was a factor that Hodgson, a wild card winner at both Brands Hatch and Donington, used to good effect last year.

The Burnley rider, though, has been here on three previous occasions and is hoping to build on the confidence he gained last week, despite a finish of 11th place after crashing on the second lap.

He said: "I started to ride well in Australia and it showed that there is light at the end of the tunnel, before that light was turned out by the weather. Already I have a huge mountain to climb if I am going to win the championship but I am now ready to challenge for podium finishes for the rest of the season."

While Hodgson was cheered home by huge crowds at British circuits last year, the Japanese contingent cannot expect similar support this weekend. This is traditionally the worst supported round of the series and a poor attendance is expected for Sunday's two races.
