THE Mayor's Day at Todmorden Town Hall is to take the form of a charity luncheon.
The incoming mayor, Councillor Dorothy Jordan, is to donate to Wood Bank Junior School for severely disabled children.
Coun Jordan, who spent the last eight years of her teaching career at the Luddendenfoot school, says she only then got to know the genuine needs of the school and its pupils. She felt it was very suitable as her assistant in her years of office was dependent on a wheelchair.
Coun Jordan said the school, which caters for several children from Todmorden, needs an extension to provide a 'soft room' for the youngsters, at a cost of about £60,000.
Coun Jordan, who will take over as Mayor of Todmorden from Councillor Joe Rez on Saturday, May 19, said: "People tend to push them away and they become forgotten.
"But after my years at Todmorden High School, I went to a few junior schools and it became obvious how much the children at Wood Bank do need. It would be nice to help them." Headmistress of Wood Bank, June Inghan, said it was excellent news that Coun Jordan had chosen the school and that such assistance was much appreciated.
She said the lottery had helped with funding for the planned extension, but a very enthusiastic group of parents were putting in a lot of effort and this generous move would really encourage them.
