A CONCERT pianist will play the first notes on Blackburn Cathedral's new £21,000 piano - believed to be the finest in town.

Martin Roscoe, an internally acclaimed pianist who is originally from Blackburn, is giving the opening recital, including Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy.

The Yamaha C7 concert grand piano was bought from the Cathedral's Millennium Organ Appeal of £60,000.

By next March they also hope to buy a new £16,000 chamber organ from the fund.

The rest will be contributed to the quarter of a million pound restoration of the Cathedral organ.

Cathedral officials believe that the piano will be the best in town for recitals.

The recital takes place on Saturday 7.30pm, tickets cost £8 or £6 for concessions.

To book call the Cathedral on 01254 51491, or the Music Cellar in Preston on 01772 251407, or on the door.

The proceeds go to the Choir's USA Tour Fund, which will fund their visit to Fairfield in Connecticut, Princeton and Newport Rhode Island.
