Waterhead 6
Leigh East 10 LEIGH East second team are undisputed champions of the the NW Counties Division Five - bringing the first Open Age championship to the club for the first time since the heady days of the early 1990s.
East travelled to Waterhead for their midweek championship decider knowing a win would guarantee them the title. It wasn't the spectacular finish they might have hoped for after a season in which they have lost just one league game.
But on a night of continual rain and on a muddy, school-size pitch, east knew exactly what they had to do to clinch the title.
Open rugby and set moves were never a real option but every player gave 100 per cent commitment.
They defended superbly with some big hits soon taking the sting out of the Waterhead pack and with Craig Anderson taking his chances to touchdown twice, Austin Monks converting once, they more than deserved their win.
The three man of the match awards went to Gary Molyneaux, Bob Hoey and Chris Penkywicz.
