Waterhead 14 Leigh East 29 DESPITE the poor weather conditions and a muddy pitch, Leigh East overcame the odds to collect two more valuable points in the race for the National Conference Division One title.

In such adverse conditions this midweek game on Waterhead's temporary home on a local school pitch was never going to be an easy one to win.

But East stuck to the task in hand to gradually wear down the bigger home side who, despite trying everything they could to overcome the visitors, never quite found the means to do so.

Yet by the half way stage Waterhead led by 8-7 with a penalty and converted try against a try from Mark Kay, which followed a fine passing move along the backs, and a penalty from Anthony Gredecki and John Gunning drop goal.

Within minutes of taking the field as second half substitutes, the fresh legs of Darren Hall and Gary Fletcher had crossed the whitewash for tries converted by

Gredecki to give East a 19-8 lead.

A 16th minute try and goal from Waterhead put the hosts back in the frame but east's more mobile set adapted far better to the conditions and Mick Redford, outstanding at loose-forward, scored twice. The first came after Hall and Kay combined, the second seeing him race home from the base of a scrum. Gredecki added one conversion.
