RESCUED: Bambi, a week old lamb born in a slaughter house, was making friends with Nicholas the Great Dane after it was rescued by the landlady of the Waggon and Horses at Birtle, Mrs Christine Nyland.

MOTHER-IN-LAW: Comedian Les Dawson presented medals and trophies to 100 pupils of the A and E Davies School of Dancing. Les's own daughter, Julia (10), was awarded a gold medal while Philip Adderley, aged 6, of Hollingwood Close, Bury, was presented with the school trophy. A dance followed the presentation ceremony at Sunnybank Community School.

RUDDY TO RETIRE: Billy Rudd's playing career which spanned more than 600 cup and league games came to an end at Gigg Lane. And for the 33-year-old midfield who had seen service with six Football League clubs at all levels of the game there was undoubtedly a lump in his throat as he led the Bury team out of the players' tunnel to receive a heart-warming reception from the Shakers' supporters.

NOT SO SUPER: Bury police superintendent Jack Brindley was discharged from hospital after recovering from an attack in which he was kicked unconscious by a football fan at the Bury/Cardiff promotion battle at Gigg Lane. The 46-year-old, who was in charge of the crowd control inside the ground, was kicked in the head by someone standing on top of a trainer's dug-out near the players' tunnel.
