FINE young citizens are wanted by police in a search for outstanding examples to the community.

Greater Manchester Police are looking for fresh nominations in the annual Young Citizen of the Year Awards, with tempting rewards being offered. The winner will receive £1,500 for a charity or community initiative of their choice, and a VIP day out at a leading football club.

A further 11 runners-up will be given a £100 cheque for their own worthy causes, a meal for two and a Christmas "Flight of Fantasy" trip.

Friends and family can nominate anyone who gives up time to help others, and is aged between 10 and 18 on July 1, the closing date for entries.

Chief Constable David Wilmot said: "I think it is important to give credit to these youngsters as they are excellent role models and will hopefully inspire others to follow in their footsteps."

The search is being spearheaded by charity fund-raiser Natasha Evans, who was last year's winner, and BBC news presenter Gordon Burns.

Nomination forms are available at police stations and secondary schools or by ringing 856 8888.
