FOUR local anglers will be off to sunny Spain later this month to compete in the grand final of the £21,000 Embassy Challange - the world's biggest angling pairs competition.

The team of 12 from the North West will enjoy an all-expenses paid trip to the Spanish resort of Tarragona on the Costa Dorada, starting on May 13.

Father and son pairing, Ron and Kevin Hayes of Hindley Green, will be making their first trip to the final after finishing third in the qualifying round on the Leeds-Liverpool canal. Both fish for Fir Tree AS.

Ron, of Maple Avenue, landed two good eels in the final 15 minutes to total 1.430kg while Kevin, of Weymouth Drive, netted two bream and a roach in the first 15 minutes for 1.910kg.

They will be joined by Sam Pemdlebury of Thornycroft, Leigh and Shaun Bilsbury of Meadowbank Gardens, Glazebury.

Bilsbury and Pendlebury, who both fish for the Leigh & District AA, earned their final spot by winning the qualifying round on the Leeds-Liverpool canal. The B&K Bait Whizzo pair will also be making their debut in the final.
