TYLDESLEY swimmer Khalid Jhugroo has been chosen to represent Great Britain in the 5k Open Water event in the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan in July.

Khalid, 15, achieved his qualifying time at Manchester's new Aquatic Centre earlier this month when he set a new PB time of 56mins 52.33 to finish well inside the qualifying time of 58.20.

He finished in second place overall to 22-year-old Greg Orphanides of Portsmouth who will also compete in Japan.

Also competing in the 5k event was Tyldesley's Heather Frederikson, 15, who slashed two minutes off her previous best time to record 61.08.34 but she was just outside the Ladies qualifying time of 60.25.

The Aquatic centre was also the venue for the trials for the European Youth Olympics to be held in Mucia, Spain. Competing in these trials was 14-years-old Tyldesley swimmer Frances Peers who secured a new PB in the 200m breast-stroke against some strong competition.

At the Lancashire Age Groups, Tyldesley swimmers again achieved fine results. National Qualifying Times were achieved by Heather Frederikson, Jessica Howarth, Khalid Jhugroo, Matthew Kearns and Frances Peers as Tyldesley brought home 16 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze as well as 95 PB's.

At the Central Lancashire Warburton's Gala several swimmers set new personal best times.

Declan Peers slashed 8.5 seconds off his previous best for the Boys 10 Years 50m backstroke while sister Frances set a new PB in the 50m freestyle as well as setting a new record in the Girls 14 Years 100m breast-stroke.

Keeping it in the family was Sean Peers who set two new PBs in the Boys 16 Years 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle.

Sarah Wood set a new PB time by 1.4 seconds in the Girls 14 years 100m breast-stroke while Michelle Greensmith and Samantha Thompson produced PBs in the Girls 14 Years 50m freestyle. Stephen Cottam also set a new PB in the Boys 14 Years 50m freestyle.
