ADULT learners can sign up to a new "passport to learning" scheme to make their studies easier.

Local libraries have joined up with Bury College and Holy Cross College to allow older students greater access to resources.

The move is part of the Government-led "Empowering the Learning Community" initiative.

It aims to help registered adult learners, giving them somewhere quiet to study, access to learning resources and computer support. Also being targeted are those with sensory impairments.

Councillor Stella Smith, the council's post-16 and community development spokesman, said the scheme would allow learners to use facilities at the two colleges along with Bury library and art gallery. "These range from free use of computers and access to the Internet to study materials and facilities," she said.

On the first visit, students will need to bring proof of study, whether it's a degree or a painting course. They will then be given their passport and can use it at the centres involved with the scheme.

The scheme will run from Tuesday May 8 to Friday June 1.
