POUND the pavements or pump the pedals to help save a poorly Radcliffe girl and hundreds like her.

Elizabeth Morris (5) of Hollow Meadow, is hoping as many people as possible will take part in a sponsored run or cycle ride next month and raise funds for the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust.

As earlier reported Elizabeth, known as Beth, suffers from leukaemia which was first diagnosed in 1997. Chemotherapy put her into remission and ongoing treatment kept her illness at bay until just after Christmas, when she suffered a relapse.

Now doctors at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital have told her mother Janet (32) and father Jeremy (33) that a bone marrow transplant is their daughter's only chance of long-term survival.

The Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust is the country's main marrow donor register with a database of more than 300,000 potential donors. But it costs £50 to tissue type each donor and the charity receives no government or lottery funding so money is desperately needed. You can help by joining in a five mile fun run in Bury on June 10 that has been organised by the Bury Friends of the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust.

The event will be staged at King George V Playing Fields, Newbold Street at 2pm. The run will go through Lowercroft and Walshaw before heading back to the park for a fun day of games and stalls.

Elizabeth has been invited to give out the prizes and judge a fancy dress competition.

Organiser, Carol Snowdon, has appealed for a disc jockey with a PA system to volunteer their services and shout out the numbers of winners crossing the finishing line. If you can help, call her on 01204 883098.

There will be another chance to support the Trust by saddling up for Lancashire County Council's Festival of Cycling.

The Trust has been designated the beneficiary of all money raised from Bike To Work Day on June 19, although you can also cycle to school or the shops.

To find out more about the event, advice on how to stage your own and information on how to become a volunteer donor call Linda Crawford, the Trust's area manager on 01253 860 333.

If you are interested in joining the register of volunteer donors you must be between 18 and 40, weigh more than 8st and be in good general health.

Men are desperately needed as it has been proven they do, in many cases, make better donors. Women who are pregnant or have a child under the age of 12 months cannot join the register or donate.

A SPECIAL information evening for potential donors will be held at the Castle Leisure Centre in Bury on Wednesday, May 16.

Anyone thinking of becoming a bone marrow donor or wishing to find out more about what is involved can learn first hand from a recent donor.

Carol Snowdon said: "We want people to be fully aware of the whole process of joining the register and what happens if a match is found. On the night people can take home a form to fill in and discuss things with their family. They may not be a match for Elizabeth but may be for someone else. The Morris family are very keen for more people to join to register."

Elizabeth's parents have been invited to the information evening, which starts at 7.30pm.
