ATHERTON town centre is facing a whole new era, but it has a fascinating past.

Knowledge of the town's history could win you a prize during the town's spectacular festival period (May 12-22) if you take the opportunity to travel back in time and celebrate the town's heritage.

You may discover the secrets of Atherton's past in the town centre trail with up-to-the-minute prizes including tickets for the Hear'Say concert in September at Manchester plus vouchers to spend locally.

New attractions for this year's festival include a heritage tour on wheels and a talk by Brian Clare about the Pretoria Pit disaster.

Festival favourite Tony Ashcroft will again be conducting a tour through Atherton Cemetery.

The fun begins on Saturday May 12 with a festival market at the Jubilee Hall featuring children's entertainer Louby-Lou, face painters, stalls and refreshments.

Regular favourites include a festival dance, songs of praise and schools concerts. To find out more, contact Atherton Library, York Street (01942 404817).

Forms for the town centre trail competition are also available from the library and Valise, 58 Market Street, Atherton.
