I WOULD not agree with any plan for Sainsburys to be used to accommodate asylum-seekers when the building is vacated in June.

If Bury Council would spend some of the council tax paid by the people of Prestwich and Whitefield it might enable us to use the site for a local swimming pool and health centre. The opportunity for local hydrotherapy treatment, for example, would do wonders for those disabled with bone and lung problems and many other conditions.

Many of these people cannot travel to Bury or to Broughton to enable them to undertake this kind of therapeutic activity. As a consequence, they may not have any social life outside their own homes.

Having a swimming pool in the town would greatly improve the quality of life for both the able-bodied and disabled residents of Prestwich and Whitefield, who would not then mind paying the extra council tax coming into effect this year.

Come on Bury Council, do something to ensure that the Longfield Centre does not become a run-down litter-filled area, like most of the rest of Prestwich with all its takeaway food shops which we don't need.

Use the council tax to give something back so that we can feel proud of councillors that we put into power in order to fulfil the wishes of people who care about their community.

PENSIONER,

Prestwich.
