FORGET Crufts -- it was a far bark from a dog's life in Leyland on Friday as the South Ribble Fun Dog Show got into full swing at Worden Park.

Around 60 proud owners turned up with their pet pooches for the first show of its kind in the town, run in conjunction with the National Canine Defence League (NCDL).

And the competition was tough! All types of dogs, from cute collies to prime poodles, turned up for the event, aiming to scoop the top spot in one of three categories.

Youngsters also enjoyed showing off their pets and painting their faces to enter the Owner Who Most Resembled Their Dog category. First prize went to Hannah Nightingale as spotty dalmation Milly, Cameron Brownrigg came second as Harvey the Austrailian sheep dog and third place went to Claire Taylor for looking like Gemma a cross collie. But the dogs certainly had their moment in the Waggiest Tail and Best Tricks categories. Murphy, owned by Stuart Gibbens, scooped the waggiest tail honour while second place went to poodle Zephyr, owned by mother and son team Vanessa and Joe Murphy. Third place went to Mike Bennett with Pebbles.

First prize for Best Trick went to twirling Zephyr -- the poodle on a winning streak -- while Tess weaved in and out of her owner Pauline's legs to scoop second place. Third prize went to Joe Murphy with his collie dog Rafiki who crawled along the floor.

Dog warden Debbie Pristly said: "It was a lovely day with dogs of all shapes and sizes. We hope the show will become an annual event in the future, it was a great success.

"We'd like to thank the sponsors, the judge Ann Lyons and a special thanks to Councillor Breakell for his contribution and support."

As the event was held during National Poop Scoop Week the council also used the opportunity to encourage dog owners to clear-up their dog's mess using the special bins located on the park.
