COMPANIES could be legally required to formally investigate all workplace accidents from next year.

That's the warning from Bolton and Bury Chamber to local businesses.

Chamber health and safety manager Steve Horrocks said: "A Health and Safety Commission consultation is currently under way which will inform potential new legislation.

"As such, it is highly likely that as well as investigating all incidents, employers will be required to keep a record that an investigation has been carried out and that its conclusions have been taken into account in revising the workplace risk assessment."

He added: "It is a good idea for firms to prepare for the potential legislation as good practice in accident investigation will help firms avoid unnecessary accidents in the future and raise their overall business performance."
