BURGLARY rates in Leigh have dropped, thanks to a new multi-agency approach.

The reduction in break-ins mirrors a cut in the crime figures throughout the Greater Manchester region.

Greater Manchester Police have reduced the crime rates by 3.6 per cent (13,632 less accounts of crime) in the region within the last year, according to the recently published crime statistics.

Burglary was brought down by just less than 5 per cent, along with a 12.3 per cent reduction in auto crimes.

Assistant Chief Constable (for crime) Alan Green said, "I am delighted that this matter has been highlighted in the report, as in the past, this force has received critical comment about the levels of recorded crime."

Robbery increased by 14.9 per cent, but the publishing of these figures will give the force a true understanding of what is to be dealt with.

The head of Leigh police, Supt Mary Boylan, said: "We are committed to reducing crime in the Leigh sub division.

"Our recently launched burglary-reduction strategy has led to improvement in the way we deal with burglaries and has led to a reduction in burglaries.

"This, however, is not just a police issue, and we are working hard with our partners in the local authority to enhance our communities and educate the public that it is important for them to help themselves and make it hard for the thieves.

"We regularly publish crime-prevention advice in the local newspapers. Please take that advice."
