AN area once listed as a grot spot has become a beautiful safe haven for children, thanks to Groundwork Rossendale.
The site was an old bleachworks and harmful residue was found in the soil, but using current guidelines the pollution was tackled making the area safe for public use.
Japanese knotweed, which causes environmental problems, has been eradicated and access to the area has been improved.
Paths have been added, play equipment installed including a 'little hamlet' for toddlers, tram tracks, a suspension bridge, chain walk, balance beam and mini-goalposts.
Many ideas came from residents in the area and children from Stonefold Primary School and to celebrate the completion of the work the Mayor and Mayoress of Rossendale, Coun Jimmy and Mrs Grogan, were invited to officially open the play area.
The work was made possible thanks to Lancashire Waste Services Lancashire Environment Fund, Action for Haslingden Partnership and Rossendale Council.
