PENDLE MP Gordon Prentice has lashed out at scientists who mixed up sheep and cattle brains in an experiment designed to see if sheep in the early 1990s were carrying BSE.

In the House of Commons Mr Prentice asked how professional scientists could have mixed up cattle brains with those of sheep making the results of the experiments invalid.

He told Environment and Agriculture Minister Margaret Beckett the key question was whether poor record keeping and sloppy laboratory procedures had compromised the results of other experiments.

MPs were told an investigation was in hand to establish the facts. Afterwards Mr Prentice said: "This sort of thing undermines confidence in the Department of Rural Affairs so it is important we find out precisely what happened."
