BONFIRE night can go with a bang: but make sure you take precautions.

That's the message from council health and safety experts, who are offering advice to fireworks display organisers.

They want organisers to be aware of their responsibilities to the public and employees, and cut down the risk of injury.

Councillor Pam Walker, public protection spokesman, said: "Stringent precautions are necessary when organising a fireworks display to ensure that safety always comes first.

"By following a few simple rules it is possible to substantially reduce risks and ensure that everyone goes home happy and unharmed."

Officers advise organisers to make sure the emergency services know of displays, and that neighbours are informed. They recommend having at least 50mx20m for the firing area, plus a 100mx50m dropping zone for spent fireworks. Spectators must be kept at least 25m from the firing area.

The site should be large and clear, away from buildings, trees and overhead cables. Exits should be well away from the firing area and well-lit.

Ensure there is at least one steward for every 250 spectators, suitable crowd barriers, and a public address system.

Fireworks should comply with BS 7114 part 2 1988, and should be doused in water if unspent.
