WARREN Hegg has succeeded John Crawley as Lancashire captain for next season.
The 33-year-old wicketkeeper, one of the 11 England players who declared their availability to tour India last week, has been Crawley's deputy for the past two summers.
"It's great news, especially after being selected for the winter tours," said Hegg.
The decision was made by Lancashire's committee on Monday after consulting with Mike Watkinson, who was recently appointed cricket manager.
"I'm looking forward to working with Mike again and getting back to the winning ways we had at Lancashire in the 1990s," added Hegg.
Crawley, who had been captain since 1999, was not invited to re-apply for the job after a disappointing 2001 summer for Lancashire in which they failed to get out of the second division of the National League and only avoided relegation from the first division of the championship on the last day of the season.
