A SILVER car similar to one involved in a crash in which four people died had been seen driving at 'excessive speed' moments before, an inquest has heard.

The accident happened last Thursday on a road outside Thornton Grammar School in Bradford.

Two-year-old Shoaib Ghulan of Hartley Street, Burnley died on Friday in Leeds Royal Infirmary. He was travelling in a green Rover car with his 24-year-old mother, his six-year-old brother, a 26 year old female driver and another 25-year-old female passenger.

Another passenger in the Rover, Sakina Bi, 66, of White's View, Manningham in Bradford died at the scene.

Shoaib's mother and brother are still in hospital with the driver, and another woman passenger.

The other car involved in the accident, a silver X-registration Ford Focus collided head on with the Rover, before turning on to its roof and partially disintegrating.

Coroner's officer Alan Pritchard said witnesses described a silver car being driven at excessive speed along Thornton Road and was seen to overtake a line of traffic before the driver appeared to have lost control. Carl Jeffrey, 19, and Jordan Rhodes, 18, both of Bradford were travelling in the Ford Focus.

They died from multiple injuries after being transferred to Bradford Royal Infirmary. Christopher Simpson, 18, of Allerton who was in the back of the Focus is in a stable condition in Bradford Royal Infirmary.

The inquest at Bradford Coroner's Court heard the teenagers had been asked by a friend to have a look at the silver X-registration Focus which had some minor problems to see if Carl, a mechanic, could fix it.

Bradford Coroner Roger Whittaker expressed sympathy to members of the families at the opening of the inquest and adjourned the hearing to a later date.
