LEIGH MP Andy Burnham has welcomed a breakthrough in speeding up compensation claims for former miners suffering respiratory complaints or vibration white finger.

Mr Burnham raised the issue in the House of Commons with Trade and Industry minister Brian Wilson after becoming concerned that 2,500 of his constituents are still awaiting to have their claims settled.

Mr Wilson announced that companies will now be able to reduce the information they request from claimants and, as a result, speed up the handling of claims.

"The delays in settling claims is causing great distress to families," said Mr Burnham.

"More needs to be done to give the people affected the chance of a better quality of life in retirement.

"This breakthrough is good news. I will be watching closely to ensure it translates into quicker payments for people in Leigh."
