ACCRINGTON Stanley have made an enquiry about Hyde's utility man Peter Band - but don't agree with the asking price.

Boss John Coleman said the Reds have been keeping tracks on the 28-year-old, thought to be valued at more than £5,000 by fellow UniBond Premier side Hyde.

"We made an enquiry but we didn't agree with what they were asking. We are waiting for them to get back to us," said the Reds chief, who recently spent £5,000 on midfielder David Robinson from Runcorn.

Coleman has had his eye on Band as he would be extremely useful especially with Stanley's current injury crisis.

"Peter can cover all positions. He can play up front, in midfield or defence. He is a good player," said Coleman.

But United's new boss Dave Nolan is keen to keep hold of Band who came into semi-professional football only around three years ago but has been recently captaining the side in the absence of the injured John Foster.

"I've told Coley that Peter is very much in my plans and that it would take a massive offer to tempt me to sell him," said Nolan, who is battling to keep his relegation-threatened side together. Hyde are thought to be asking £15,000 from Conference side Southport for their top striker Simon Yeo .

Meanwhile, Reds boss Coleman will have his mind focused on tonight's FA Umbro Trophy first round replay as UniBond First Division leaders Radcliffe Borough come to the Crown Ground.

The two sides drew 0-0 at the weekend but Boro, managed by one-time Burnley player Kevin Glendon, had the better of the game. Stanley keeper Jamie Speare saved a penalty from former Manchester United player Mark Dempsey.

"Jamie has done really well. He started the game a bit shakey but did really well with the penalty and kept us in it," said the boss.

"We are relieved to be still in the game as we did not play well. We never got our passing game going and that was disappointing.

"They had a lot of chances and it won't be easy tonight."

What did please Coleman from Saturday, though, was his defence. Early in the season, Stanley were leaking goals at an alarming rate but have tightened up in recent games.

"The lads defended well. We had Paul Burns playing out of position in defence, Jonathan Smith, Paul Howarth and Peter Cavanagh in the backline.

"The defence is getting a bit more regular but injuries could cause us to change it around again tonight."

Burns (calf) and Cavanagh (knee) will both face late fitness tests while Coleman is hopeful striker Paul Mullin will be fit to face his old club.

The 14-goal hitman missed the game at Stainton Park with a rib injury and he could be again sidelined.

"Paul really wanted to play against his old club. He was keen to play. We are hopeful he is going to be fit and he could get his chance tonight."

And the Reds boss is delighted that his frontman Lutel James - despite still feeling the effects of 'flu - has been called up to the UniBond League side which will face an FA XI, mostly consisting of Conference players, at Altrincham on Monday, November 19.

"I'm really pleased for him but I thought we would have had more than one player," said the chief. The rest of the 18-man squad has been picked mainly from Burton Albion, Altrincham and Barrow.

"It is good that he is recognised and it acts as trials for the England semi-professional side so he has a chance to be selected for them," said the boss.

Striker Coleman was himself once picked for the England side - and it was memorable for him!

"I got one cap when England were playing Finland Under 21 side at Woking. I only came on for the final 12 minutes and Sammy Hyypia ended up marking me.

"I only learnt recently it was him though!"
