AFTER winning a campaign which halted Burnley Football Club's plans to extend their ground, a band of residents are hoping to start a community group.

Earlier in the year Margaret Nelson, of Thursfield Road and other residents of Fulledge successfully campaigned against a proposed move of Burnley Cricket Club on to the Fulledge Recreation Ground.

The campaign effectively scuppered Burnley Football Club's bid to build a new stadium on the site of the old Bellvadere Road cricket ground.

Mrs Nelson said residents in 88 of the 90 houses close by were against the proposed sale and 300 people all from the Fulledge area had signed a protest petition.

The residents also got the backing of the Showmen's Guild who have staged fun fairs at Fulledge for almost 50 years.

Now former protesters have set up a meeting, to be held in St Cathreine's Church Hall in Mary Street on Thursday, November 15, where local people will be given the chance to have more say about what they would like to see in Fulledge and their hopes and concerns. Mrs Nelson said: "The action to save the Recreation Ground aroused a lot of community spirit.

"Now we want to improve the area and provide more facilities for people."

Margaret has no specific plans for action, but is hoping that everyone who attends the meeting will contribute ideas. We will be asking people what their concerns are and finding out if there is anyone interested in becoming involved."

Margaret will be handing out posters with full details of the meeting before the night. "We are just trying to give residents the opportunity to work together for our area."

Local councillor Don Hall will also give a talk on the the differences and action group can make to a community.

Representatives from the Community Alliance and Neighbourhood Watch will also be present.
