THE CLOSURE of a Leyland manufacturing plant, which dates back to 1862, was expected to be announced today, with the loss of 200 jobs.

The Leyland and Birmingham Rubber Company in Wheelton Lane is thought to be closing within the next three months.

South Ribble MP David Borrow said he had already discussed the redundancies with the chief executive of South Ribble Borough Council, and was hoping to meet with the company bosses. He said: "I want to work with them to see what support can be given to those being made redundant to give them the best chance possible for a fresh job. I also want to see if the factory can be used for another company." The company produced a variety of rubber products at the 35 acre Leyland site, including inflatables, shock absorbing insoles, squash balls, hoses and air plane wing de-icers. At its peak, 2,000 people were employed there.

A spokesperson for the firm said an announcement would be made imminently.

Meanwhile, 50 jobs have been created after a £750,000 investment into a new pub and restaurant in Bamber Bridge.

Recruiting is now taking place for the Lostock Lane eaterie, 'Millers', described by the promoters as a classic pub restaurant with a modern twist, ready for its opening on Thursday, November 29.
