BRITISH plane-spotters arrested at a Greek airfield could have endangered the security of the country, their espionage trial heard today.

The 12 Britons, including Baxenden man Steven Jenkins' brother Andy, are accused of gathering secret information at airbases across Greece and today heard the evidence of the key prosecution witness.

Squadron leader Nektarios Samaras, an officer with the Greek air force, said the 11 men and one woman were seen acting suspiciously at his base in Kalamata, southern Greece.

He said they were observed writing down details about aircraft and tried to evade being watched by his security officers.

The defendants all deny espionage, a charge which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

The case continues.
