PAUL Gascoigne will not play for Burnley again but manager Stan Ternent is hoping that both David Johnson and Marlon Beresford will.

But having started the hard work of building his squad ahead of next season he admitted: "Everything is on hold at the moment until we know what is going to happen to the money we are due from ITV Digital.

"That will have a big bearing on everything because we are owed the best part of £3million and that is a massive lump of our turnover of £10million.

"Take £3million cash off that and you are left with a massive hole."

On Gazza, Ternent admitted that the former England star is set to find work elsewhere as he explained: "We signed Paul until the end of the season and we said we would look at it then.

"But he is not short of job offers and I don't see Gazza being with us next season."

The 34-year-old failed to make the impact everyone had hoped in the closing weeks of the season but the same could not be said of Johnson, signed on loan from Nottingham Forest just before the Preston North End match at Turf Moor.

He scored five goals in eight starts and Forest are not looking for a fee for him but Ternent said: "He wants to stay and if we can we will sign him.

"I will have to see the chairman but all deals will depend on what happens with ITV Digital."

That will also apply to a move to bring Beresford back to the club on a permanent basis.

He made 13 appearances on loan from his club Middlesbrough and is out of contract in the summer.

"He was recalled because they had illness and injuries and that was a big blow for us," Ternent said. "At that time I was not in a position to make the move permanent because of his wages and the whole television thing.

"Middlesbrough's season hasn't finished yet and so we will have to wait for their retained list."

One deal that he is hoping to sort out shortly is the new contract for player of the season Dean West.

Ternent said: "I will certainly be offering him a new contract. I first signed him a long time

ago and the rest is history.

Ternent's phone has been red hot since Sunday with agents getting in touch about the players on their books who are going to be available and he admitted: "This is the busiest time of the year for that sort of thing, it's crazy."

Ternent knows that the phone will keep ringing and his club will be linked to countless players throughout the summer.

With the current uncertainty in the game, all he does not know is what budget he will be working within.

That is why he is as keen as anyone for a swift resolution to the dispute over television money.
