RELEGATION was an unspoken word when Bury FC Supporters Association held their annual presentation evening at the Social Club on Monday evening.

As ever the night was a big success, especially for one Shakers player who almost swept the board - Jon Newby.

The talented former Liverpool striker walked away with three awards and a runner-up position on the night.

Newby was voted Player of the Season by the fans and Players' Player of the Year (the Frank Hoult Shield) by his teammates. Skipper Martyn Forrest was runner-up in both categories.

And if that wasn't enough 'Newbs' was the first winner of the Billy Ayre Memorial Website Player of the Year voted for by the club's internet fans.

The Shakers' disabled supporters group bucked the trend by voting Forrest their Player of the Year with Newby hot on his heels in second place.

There were also awards for two of the club's promising youngsters with midfielder David Borley winning the Young Player of the Year and sixteen-year-old striking sensation Dave Nugent picking up the Most Promising Young Player accolade.

After watching a video of a number of the season's best strikes, Chris Billy's first goal against Brentford in the recent home game won the Goal of the Season award.

The players also made a presentation of their own to superfan Pauline Pullen in recognition for her hard work in helping organise the massive fundraising efforts that have been put in place in the last few months.

Joint chairman Fred Mason addressed the fans and thanked them for their magnificent response to the club's financial crisis -- the most difficult in the club's 117-year history.

Mr Mason's thanks were echoed by co-chairman John Smith who told the Bury Times: "We'd like to give a big thank-you to everyone who has helped the club, financially, over the past few months, it has been amazing.

"Not just our fans and people in the town, but the footballing world as a whole have rallied to our cause.

"Hopefully, in the close season we can sort out the finances, regroup and get our great little club back on a good footing.
