DEMANDS that Bury Council should foot the bill to take two unadopted roads in Elton under its wing have received the support of local councillors.

Back Bolton Road and Luton Street are used as a short cut on to Bolton Road by elderly pedestrians from the Fusiliers Court sheltered housing development. They have been asking for potholed road surfaces to be upgraded for more than 20 years.

Residents in Bolton Road were consulted about adoption of the road, and asked to pay £827 each for initial resurfacing. They refused and drew up a petition asking the council to pay.

At a special meeting of Bury West Area Board at St Stephen's Parish Church, residents argued that the road was used not only by Bolton Road residents, but also by motorists taking short cuts, dropping children at school, and visiting Fusiliers Court.

Councillors voted to recommend that the council pays the costs, if possible, with the help of the Muir Group, which runs Fusiliers Court.
