FRIENDS and relatives gathered at Jalna Home for the Elderly in Burnley for a celebration.

Resident Annie Hopkinson celebrated her 100th birthday and had bundles of cards and bouquets of flowers.

Staff organised a party for her and presented her with a birthday cake.

Annie, who was married twice, was born and brought up in Burnley.

She lived in the Rosehill and Coal Clough areas before moving to the former Monkton Rise Home for the Elderly and being transferred to Jalna in February after it closed.

She spent much of her working life as a weaver, as well as working at Holden's cafe in Burnley Market Hall and managing a cafe of her own in the town.

Jeane Walker, Annie's daughter-in-law, said: "The home has been really good. They organised the party and entertainment. We went along and one or two friends and relatives were also invited.

"She's the third 100-year-old there now. She's just getting over a broken hip. We didn't think they would operate on her, but they did.

"We didn't expect to her to pull through she was so bad, so it's even more special. She's now walking with a frame."
