HEALTH workers are to tackle teenage pregnancy problems in Pendle through a major new project.

Claire Jackson, Pendle teenage health development co-ordinator, will reveal the aims of the Teenage Health Project to Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Community Health Council at its meeting on Monday to be held in its office on Church Street, Burnley.

The project follows recommendations of the NHS, Local Health Improvement Programme, Healthy Schools Initiative and Sure Start and aims to reduce unwanted teenage pregnancies by 25 per cent by 2005.

It also wants to reduce long-term social exclusion for teenage parents and their children, provide a drop-in service, education and information, forge links between young mums and the rest of society. So far the project launched earlier this year has forged education links with seven Pendle secondary schools and developed a library of resources with teaching packs and information available to professionals.

It has also provided pharmacy training for the issue of free contraception.
