Keighley U19s 10, Centurions U19s 50: LEIGH Centurions Under 19s made it two wins from two with a 50-10 win over Academy new boys Keighley at Cougar Park.

While on reflection the final scoreline speaks of a handsome victory, the second half was a scrappy and mistake-riddled affair.

In the end, the gulf in class was huge, however the Cougars were well in contention for the first half hour before a clinical six minutes before half-time saw the Centurions add three tries.

First points

After a closely fought opening Leigh added the first points of the game when the again impressive Lee Sanderson scored following support of a destructive line break from Darren Woods. Moments later quick play down the left resulted in Eric Andrews sending winger David Ashton over by the corner flag.

As the game entered the second quarter, Keighley roared back. Loose forward Andy Fisher dummied his way over amid heavy traffic and centre Peter Hilliam converted.

Eleven minutes later Leigh fired into action with a fine 60 metre solo try from Andrews. Then, as the Cougars were recovering from that blow, the Centurions launched an exciting counter-attack from the restart. Woods showed no shortage of pace to finish a length of the field move.

Four minutes from half-time, Leigh scored their fifth try when Andrews fed Pete Fairhurst. Fairhurst was a stand-out player for the Centurions throughout. Having forgone the chance of international honours, he answered the call of his coach to help Leigh out of a squad crisis.

Sanderson's fourth conversion sent the visitors to the break with a 28-6 lead and the scrum half was heavily involved early in the second half. Having found touch from the kick-off and forced a drop out, he then scored a smart try.

The Cougars became increasingly despondent as Leigh made their extra size and pace count with further tries from Chris Smith and Chris Mellor to quickly move the score onto 44-6.

If Leigh had kept things going, who knows what could have happened? However, mistakes began to creep into the Centurions game and despite tearing holes in the defence on a number of occasions, Leigh were unable to finish.

Great try

This seemed to spur the Cougars on and they scored a great try on the hour when hooker Jones Feather supported a play down the right.

After a multitude of scrums, turnovers and stoppages Leigh hit some sort of form and added their ninth try with just four minutes remaining. Smith was the beneficiary, stepping inside the full-back from Sanderson's flat pass.

Fittingly scrum half Sanderson completed the scoring with his seventh conversion for a personal haul of 22 points.
