SLOPPY set-piece defending condemned the Clarets to a 3-1 defeat against Luton Town, leaving Burnley at the bottom of their group in the Isle of Man Steam Packet Football Festival.

Despite an improved second half display, gifting free headers to Steve Howard and David Bayliss means Burnley now face the prospect of a Friday night clash against their hosts, the Isle of Man.

Howard had given the Hatters an early lead on five minutes when he slotted home after catching the Burnley defence square and for the rest of the half the second division side dominated.

But Robbie Blake's 41st minute penalty gave Burnley an undeserved equaliser after a disappointing first-half display from Stan Ternent's team.

A number of half-time changes produced a better display from the Clarets with Glen Little looking lively down the right.

He had two penalty appeals turned down and Hatters' keeper Carl Emberson made a number of good saves.

But there was to be no way back for the Clarets after Howard's second goal and then Bayliss sealed the win for the second division side.
