IF you want to watch birds this summer, the best place to go is the Leighton Moss RSPB reserve at Silverdale.

To get there, take the M6 to junction 35a, and follow signs to Carnforth. At the traffic lights turn right, pass the station on the left and follow the signs for Silverdale. The reserve is next to Silverdale railway station.

Leighton Moss has always been an excellent area for birds with bearded tits and bitterns, which are both very rare on the reserve. Recently avocets have found the area to their liking and a breeding colony seems to be developing.

Apart from these three magnificent species, the moss is the home of otter, water rail marsh harrier and a host of waterbirds which occur throughout the year. This literally is a birdwatch for all seasons so don't miss the chance -- head for the moss right away. You will not be disappointed.
