Clarets boss Stan Ternent was not worried about his side's 3-1 defeat by Luton Town in the Steam Packet Isle of Man Football Festival yesterday.

"I'll be worried if we ever win the tournament," he quipped.

Of more concern to Ternent is the injury to Paul Weller that has seen him have his foot put in plaster for a week but he believes even that problem should be cleared up by the start of the season on August 10.

"His leg is in plaster just to make sure it is immobilised," he explained.

"There is no fracture, he has just bruised a bone and it should come out of plaster at the weekend.

"That means he could be running a few days later and he could still be available for the start of the season.

"The injury is just one of those things and all you are trying to do is get through pre-season without any serious problems.

"I am hoping that we might be able to give Ian Cox and Gordon Armstrong a bit of a run-out in our last match on Friday."

Having finished bottom of Group A that is likely to be another encounter with the Isle of Man who famously beat the Clarets a couple of seasons ago but whoever they play, Ternent just wants to have another decent match.

"Today was a good match for us, a good work-out," he said.

"There is plenty of room for improvement and we gave away some poor goals but we look like we are getting the players nice and fit.

"I have always said that the results now aren't of great importance and the main thing is that it was a decent match and we will be stronger for it.

"It was a competitive game but played in a good spirit.

"We made a few changes for the start and put on five subs because everybody needs to stretch their legs.

"That is what this tournament is all about."

The two men hoping to earn a contract with the Clarets, Marlon Broomes and Marlon Beresford, both played the full 90 minutes and Ternent was pleased with the way the defender shaped up against a lively Luton attack as he said: "Marlon Broomes did very well."

The first half was the more disappointing one for Burnley as they failed to test the Luton keeper until Robbie Blake won and then converted a 41st minute penalty.

That levelled the scores, Steve Howard having put the Hatters 1-0 up early on and it was he who headed the second nine minutes after the break.

That was from a free kick and the marking was even worse as David Bayliss nodded home a corner a minute from time to ensure the victory.

They were the sort of goals managers hate to concede and had it been a League game Ternent's players would not have been let off so lightly.

Sadly for the second division side they needed to win by one more goal to make the final and so it will be Wrexham who play in the final on Saturday, taking on Darlington who beat Rochdale 2-1 last night.

The Clarets for their part will train today and tomorrow before their final game in Ramsey on Friday night.

That will be against the hosts unless they can beat Rochdale tonight.
