DARWEN choristers were such a hit with Commonwealth Games competitors, they earned cheers of 'Encore!'

The 30-strong Blackburn with Darwen Primary Choir received a standing ovation from athletes as part of Manchester's official welcoming ceremonies. And one Canadian athlete was so delighted by the hit song 'Mancunian Way', he joined the children on stage with their national goose mascot dancing in the wings.

The Year 5 and Year 6 choristers from Avondale County, Ashleigh GM and St Barnabas CE Schools in Darwen performed in front of four competing nations Swaziland, Grenada, the British Virgin Isles and Canada.

Angela Williams, Blackburn with Darwen music services curriculum and development manager, said: "The trip was absolutely fantastic and when the children were asked to perform an encore, they were delighted. They had a great time and it was a chance to come face to face with great athletes."

Alison Pickup, music co-ordinator at Avondale School, Durham Road, said the children had managed a true "transformation" since the choir formed in December.
