ORGANISERS of the Darwen Gala parade on August 17 fear it could come to a standstill unless local people come forward with support.

The parade, which has been run by a committee for 22 years, has previously relied on the loan of lorries and trucks for success. But road parade secretary Bob Waters says the committee is desperate for people to help keep the tradition alive.

He said: "People have told us, 'I don't know why you bother,' but it is worth it for the community.

"The floats which are an important part of the parade are in danger of becoming obsolete. There are groups which have been involved each year but we would like more support. We would like to hear from anyone who can offer their vehicle. We need all types."

Lucite, formerly ICI, previously provided the main carnival centrepiece but have withdrawn support and no longer allocate funds for the event. Marion May, from the personnel department, said: "We no longer have the budget for the lorry to be used as a float."

But several community organisations have assured organisers they are still backing the parade.

Tricia Whittle, of Abacus Day Nursery which has supported the gala for the past four years, said: "This year the children are dressing up in a Jubilee theme. We will be using a flat-back wagon with a frame. It takes a lot of effort to put a float together but it is worth it.

"It would be a shame if the parade stopped because it's a good opportunity for the community to get out on the streets and get involved with the spirit of the day."

Lightbown Street residents, Royal British Legion and Darwen Morris dancers have also pledged backing. But Mr Waters suggested that recent increases in the cost of insurance may be behind a growing disinterest in the event.

A spokesman from Martin Bird Insurance company in Darwen said: "There would be considerable costs for public liability insurance because of the rise in premiums since September 11. There is the option of particular community groups who are using the floats to extend their policy for a nominal fee. The best thing is to contact their broker."

This year the gala also includes a Kylie Minogue tribute and a display of classic cars, military vehicles and old Darwen buses. The committee is appealing for more exhibitors.
