A 24-YEAR-OLD man trying to re-establish himself after being released from prison stole four sweatshirts to raise money to pay his board.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Terry Howie was detained in the cathedral grounds after stealing the garments from British Home Stores.

Howie, of Mosley Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to theft of property worth £88. He was given a conditional discharge for 18 months and ordered to pay £50 costs.

Kevin Preston, defending, said following his release from prison in February Howie had found himself living "here and there" and without any stability in his life. For the past six weeks he had been living at the home of a lady who had been kind enough to offer him more permanent accommodation.

"He did not have the money to pay his board to this landlady that was the motivation behind the offence," said Mr Preston.
